Stone Disc Table

A Designer-Maker's Poetic Tale

The concept behind this distinctive table design was born from a desire to breathe new life into the post-industrial byproducts of the stone countertop industry. Typically, the offcuts generated during the process of shaping stone slabs into countertops are discarded, creating unnecessary waste. However, this table transforms these neglected stone remnants into a beautifully crafted, functional piece.

Exploring Post-Industrial Natural Stone Offcuts in Product Design

Stacked stone discs, carved from scrap materials, are polished and assembled to create a solid, weighted pedestal base. An internal threaded rod keeps these stone pieces securely in place, ensuring durability and stability. Topping this remarkable base is a sleek, laminated white oak surface that complements the layered stone foundation.

To maintain the captivating visibility of the stone base, a thin layer of felt is meticulously cut to match the table's shape and serves as an elegant table cover. This thoughtful design allows the intriguing stone base to remain exposed, replacing traditional draped cloths and adding a unique touch to any setting.

The weighted pedestal base not only contributes to the table's sturdiness but also makes it versatile for various settings, whether in a commercial or residential space. Crafted from natural and tactile materials, this table exudes a welcoming quality and carries an essence of sustainability through its innovative use of discarded stone remnants.
